OATH

We humans are so complicated, in the light of the summations that lead us to making decisions. We become deceitful in our efforts to be true to all available pathways of life. Every now and then, if we have our way, we want to be part of everything. Hence, no truer way have we shown solidarity than by averring allegiance with OATH.

There are many parts of us which are divided in sworn oaths to family, religion, society, community, humanity, health and many more. So many oaths that we cannot even count. They make you swear and swear. Under the extreme weight of these oaths and allegiances, we end up compromising, for it is inevitable. So I ask, why the superfluity of sworn oaths when compromise is inevitable???

Take a knight for example, a man of honor enlisted and ranked for the display of these endearing qualities - purity of heart, valor, honor, virtue, integrity and chastity. {S}He comes under oath to the land, the brotherhood, the innocent, the weak ,and most importantly the king. Before the knighthood oath, he owes his parents obedience, his family, his place of origin.

Under all these oaths, can he really play fair and keep everyone happy? What about when there are conflicting demands.?? Wont he forsake the oaths earlier taken? What if his father despises the king? What if the king massacres the innocent? What if the king wants him to behead his father?? What if the Gods want the king removed?? Or the brotherhood wants to revolt and usurp the king?? Moving forward requires breaking oaths to strengthen other oaths.

Then to what end are we humans always demanding oath for allegiances? If compromise is inevitable why the emphasis on allegiance?? Can’t we share fairly and tilt when the circumstances are extenuating?? Sometimes, I think about things like these when my own paths make my oaths challenging.

So before you label my decisions wrong and me an oath-breaker, ask yourself, can we really keep all these oaths???? Because no matter what you do, you’ll forsake one oath or another.

  2. This is deep, very thought provoking, kudos my brother. To me though, perhaps influenced by Christian mindset, hierarchy of authority determine which oath take precedence. If you would permit me to quote a scripture to drive home my point, I would quote 1CO 11:3, the head of every man is the Christ, the head of woman is husband, the head of Christ is God. So, the allegiance (or an oath) to God on the path of a wife should take precedence if it is conflict with her husband's authority.
Let me stop here abeg, before I make a simple comment like an epistle.

But hey, your write ups are always superb, you're talented my brother

    1. Egbon, very true. The hierarchy makes it less chaotic. We just have to figure which weighs more than the other in our 'book of importance'. Thanks for taking time to read here.
